A l’occasion du cinquantenaire du premier numéro de la revue marocaine Souffles-Anfas et de la parution de la première anthologie de langue anglaise de la revue,Souffles-Anfas: A Critical Anthology from the Moroccan Journal of Culture and Politics, Double Change et Columbia Global Centers | Paris ont le plaisir de vous acceuillir pour une lecture bilingue de poèmes et de textes parus pour la première fois dans la revue Souffles. Fondée en 1966 par Abdellatif Laâbi et un petit nombre de poètes et d’artistes de l’avant-garde marocaine, puis interdite en 1972, Souffles et, à partir de 1971, son doublet de langue arabe Anfas, fut une revue littéraire et politique de très grande importance au Maghreb.
Porteuse du courant de pensée tiers-mondiste, tribune de la gauche marxiste-léniniste au Maroc, cette revue fut aussi un des premiers forums pour de nombreux écrivains et artistes de l’ère des indépendances, parmi eux Abdelkebir Khatibi, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Albert Memmi, Abraham Serfaty, Etel Adnan, Sembene Ousmane, Amilcar Cabral, René Depestre, et Mohamed Melehi. Avec Hocine Tandjaoui, poète de Souffles, Olivia C. Harrison et Teresa Villa-Ignacio présenteront Souffles-Anfasavant d’en lire quelques extraits en langue originale (français et arabe) et en traduction anglaise.

Olivia C. Harrison est Assistant Professor de français et d’études proche-orientales à la University of Southern California. Elle est l’auteur de Transcolonial Maghreb : Imagining Palestine in the Era of Decolonization (Stanford University Press, 2016) et, avec Teresa Villa-Ignacio, éditrice d’une anthologie en anglais de la revue marocaine Souffles-Anfas : A Critical Anthology from the Moroccan Journal of Culture and Politics (Stanford University Press, 2016).
Teresa Villa-Ignacio est boursière postdoctorale en anglais et chercheuse invitée en français à Tulane University. Elle prépare actuellement un manuscrit de livre qui s’intitule « Poethical Import : Translationships in French-American Poetic Exchange ». Elle est aussi productrice et animatrice d’une série de podcasts, Sounding Translation et, avec Olivia C. Harrison, co-éditrice de Souffles-Anfas : A Critical Anthology from the Moroccan Journal of Culture and Politics (Stanford University Press, 2016).
Né à Biskra (Algérie), Hocine Tandjaoui est l’auteur du recueil de poèmes Le temps de nous-mêmes précédé de L’Attente de l’arche (Saint-Germain-des-Prés, 1974), des romans Les jours lents (Léo Sheer, 2003) et La bande noire dans l’ombre (108 Edition, mai 2016). Acteur et administrateur du Théâtre de la Mer à Alger jusqu’à son départ pour la France en 1972, il a également collaboré à la revue marocaine Souffles.

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the first issue of the Moroccan journal Souffles-Anfas and the publication of the first English-language anthology of the journal,Souffles-Anfas: A Critical Anthology from the Moroccan Journal of Culture and Politics, Double Change and Columbia Global Centers | Paris are pleased to welcome you to a bilingual reading of poems and texts published for the first time in Souffles. Founded in 1966 by Abdellatif Laâbi and a few avant-garde Moroccan poets and artists and banned in 1972, Souffles-Anfas was one of the most influential literary, cultural, and political reviews to emerge in postcolonial North Africa.
An early forum for tricontinental postcolonial thought and writing and a tribune for the Moroccan Marxist-Leninist left, the journal published texts ranging from experimental poems, literary manifestoes, and abstract art to political tracts, open letters, and interviews by some of the period’s most important artists and intellectuals, including Abdelkebir Khatibi, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Albert Memmi, Abraham Serfaty, Etel Adnan, Sembene Ousmane, Amilcar Cabral, René Depestre, and Mohamed Melehi. With Souffles poet Hocine Tandjaoui, Olivia C. Harrison and Teresa Villa-Ignacio will present Souffles-Anfas and read texts in the original French and Arabic as well as in English translation.

Olivia C. Harrison is Assistant Professor of French and Middle East Studies at the University of Southern California. She is the author of Transcolonial Maghreb: Imagining Palestine in the Era of Decolonization (Stanford University Press, 2016) and, with Teresa Villa-Ignacio, editor of Souffles-Anfas: A Critical Anthology from the Moroccan Journal of Culture and Politics (Stanford University Press, 2016).
Teresa Villa-Ignacio is Postdoctoral Fellow in English and Visiting Scholar in French at Tulane University. She is currently preparing a book manuscript entitled “Poethical Import: Translationships in French-American Poetic Exchange.” She is also the producer and host of a podcast series, Sounding Translation, and, with Olivia C. Harrison, co-editor of Souffles-Anfas : A Critical Anthology from the Moroccan Journal of Culture and Politics (Stanford University Press, 2016).
Born in Biskra (Algeria), Hocine Tandjaoui is the author of the poetry collection Le temps de nous-mêmes précédé de L’Attente de l’arche (Saint-Germain-des-Prés, 1974) and the narrative Les jours lents (Léo Sheer, 2003). Actor and administrator of the Theater of the Sea in Algiers until his departure for France in 1972, he also participated in the Moroccan journal Souffles.
