double change et La Maison de la poésie de Paris sont heureux de vous inviter à une rencontre lecture collective de Golan Haji, Kadhim Jihad Hassan, Yasmine Seale et Habib Tengour animée par Omar Berrada et Sarah Riggs
Pendant quinze ans, l’association Tamaas a tenu chaque été un séminaire de traduction à Paris. Dans les salles et les jardins de Reid Hall, une semaine durant, des poètes d’horizons divers se retrouvaient pour s’entretraduire sans hiérarchie. Chacun.e écrivait, chacun.e traduisait, tou.te.s faisaient l’expérience d’être ensemble autrement.
Avec le temps, un fil conducteur s’est fait jour : la poésie arabe, dans ses multiples langues et sa vaste géographie. De ce fil, Omar Berrada et Sarah Riggs, co-fondateurs de Tamaas, ont entrepris de faire un livre trilingue, qui paraîtra chez Litmus Press à l’automne 2023 sous le titre Another Room to Live In (Une autre pièce où vivre).
Cette soirée se veut un avant-goût de l’ouvrage. Quatre des quinze poètes figurant au sommaire, Golan Haji, Kadhim Jihad Hassan, Yasmine Seale et Habib Tengour, liront leurs textes. Les poétesses et traductrices Marilyn Hacker et Cole Swensen feront entendre certaines de leurs traductions.

Bios
Golan Haji is a Syrian-Kurdish poet, essayist, and translator with a postgraduate degree in pathology. He lives in France. He has published five books of poetry in Arabic: He Called Out Within the Darknesses (2004), Someone Sees You As a Monster (2008), Autumn, Here, Is Magical and Vast (2013), Scale of Injury (2016), and Dogs and Beggars (2022). His translations include, among others, books by Robert Louis Stevenson and Alberto Manguel. He also published Until The War (2016), a book of prose based on interviews with Syrian women.
Kadhim Jihad Hassan was born in Southern Iraq in 1955. He has lived in France since 1976, and became a naturalized French citizen in 1991. Hassan is a poet, translator, literary critic and professor of classical Arabic literature at INALCO-Sorbonne Paris City. He has published, in Arabic and French, several critical essays and collections of poems. His translations into Arabic include Dante’s Divine Comedy, Arthur Rimbaud’s Complete Poems, Rainer Maria Rilke’s Poetic Works, Jean Genet’s Prisoner of Love, as well as several essays by Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida. In 2006, he was awarded the Prize for the best foreign-language translation by the Italian Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali (Ministry for Cultural Assets and Activities) for his critical and annotated Arabic version of Dante Alighieri’s La Divina Commedia, which joined the UNESCO Collection of Representative Works in 2003. He was awarded the 2016 Gerard of Cremona International Prize for the Promotion of Translation in the Mediterranean by the Anna Lindh Foundation in Malta.
Yasmine Seale is a writer and translator living in Paris. Her essays, poetry, visual art, and translations from Arabic and French have appeared widely. Her work has received a PEN America Literary Grant and the Wasafiri New Writing Prize for Poetry. Published work includes Aladdin: A New Translation (Liveright, 2018), The Annotated Arabian Nights (Liveright, 2021), and Agitated Air. Poems after Ibn Arabi, co-written with Robin Moger (Tenement Press, 2022).
Habib Tengour is a poet and anthropologist who was born in 1947 in Mostaganem, Algeria. He has published more than fifteen books (poetry, prose, plays, essays). His work, which has been published in France and Algeria and appeared in poetry magazines (Action Poétique, Po&sie, La traductière, and Bacchanales, among others), was translated into German, English, Arabic, Italian, Macedonian, and Dutch. He divides his time between Algeria and France, anthropological research, and literary work. He translates English and American poets (Pierre Joris, Charles Bernstein, Cole Swensen), German (Hans Thill), and Arabic ones (Saadi Youssef, Chawki Abdelamir, Moncef Louhaïbi). He was awarded the European Dante Poetry Prize, in June 2016, for his body of poetic work. He runs the “Poems of the World” series at APIC publishing house, in Algiers, whose first selection of seven poetry collections came out in the spring of 2018.
